Define the competition around a learner decision

An EdTech competitor list becomes useful when it reflects the alternatives a buyer actually considers. A university short course may compete with a professional training provider, an employer's internal programme, or postponing study altogether. Begin with the learner's objective and purchasing context, then identify direct competitors and relevant substitutes. Avoid expanding the list simply because companies share an education label.

For an illustrative research brief covering India, the US, and the UK, keep separate groups for individual purchases, employer-funded training, and institutional procurement. Choose a manageable watchlist for each. Record why each competitor belongs and which decision the comparison will inform, such as programme positioning, partnership evaluation, or a review of published course information.

Build a comparison structure before collecting pages

Define one record per offer, with fields for intended audience, entry requirements, learning outcomes, delivery format, duration, assessment, credential, support, published price, and geography. Include the evidence URL and observation date beside each field. Use an explicit unknown status when a page does not answer the question. Unknown information should remain distinguishable from a confirmed absence.

Write comparison rules for ambiguous terms. A self-paced course with weekly deadlines may differ materially from unrestricted access. Tutor support may mean individual appointments, group sessions, or a discussion forum. Capture the stated service before mapping it into a common category, and retain enough original text for a reviewer to check the interpretation.

Use sources according to what they can establish

Product pages, prospectuses, public documentation, and pricing pages provide evidence of an organisation's published offer. They do not independently verify learning outcomes or customer satisfaction. Keep a company's claims attributed to that company. Reviews and social posts can suggest questions for investigation, but their selection process usually makes them unsuitable for estimating how common an experience is.

Company filings can add context when available. The SEC's guide explains that a 10-K includes descriptions of a company's business and important risks. Companies House provides public company information and filed documents for UK entities. Confirm the legal entity, reporting period, and document scope before attaching a financial or corporate observation to a particular education brand.

Automate collection with a reviewable change log

A custom workflow can revisit approved public sources, capture relevant passages, compare them with the previous observation, and suggest changes to the structured records. Respect each source's access conditions and use an appropriate collection method. Keep source snapshots or permitted excerpts sufficient to explain why a record changed, with the collection time and extraction status.

AI is useful for proposing a change category, such as a new intake date or revised support description. Require review before replacing consequential fields. A redesigned page may move a price without changing it, and a missing section may reflect a collection failure. Route failed retrievals into an exception list so they cannot silently become market developments.

Compare offers on a like-for-like basis

In an illustrative comparison, one provider lists a course fee while another lists a monthly payment. Before comparing cost, establish the payment count, included assessment, taxes if stated, required extras, and currency date. Preserve the original currency and payment basis. An apparent price difference may disappear once the underlying package and conditions are understood.

Keep advertised features separate from analyst judgements. A documented change in assessment format is an observation. A suggestion that it may suit working learners is an interpretation that needs validation. Do not infer competitor revenue, student retention, or conversion rates from website activity. Add an explicit evidence gap when those measures matter to the decision.

Make the recurring brief support a specific action

A useful update identifies the few changes relevant to the agreed decision, links directly to their evidence, and explains the next investigation or action. Assign a researcher to source maintenance and a business owner to decisions. Set review frequency according to how quickly the information changes, with additional checks before using it in an external claim or major programme decision.

White Storm Technologies can build a tailored competitor intelligence workflow around an EdTech team's watchlist, comparison rules, and approval process. Suitable handover materials include the offer register, extraction rules, exception queue, source history, and briefing template. That makes the research repeatable when staff change or the organisation adds another country or product category.
